Through its resolution 71/288, adopted on May 24, 2017, the General Assembly designated September 30th as International Translation Day, thereby recognizing the critical role of language specialists in bridging nations and promoting peace, understanding, and development.
The date of September 30th marks the death of Saint Jerome, the translator of the Bible, who is recognized as the patron saint of translators. A monk from Stridon, he was fluent in Illyrian, Latin, Greek, and Hebrew. His translation of the Bible from Greek into Latin and parts of the Gospel from Hebrew into Greek is particularly significant. Saint Jerome passed away near Bethlehem on September 30, 420.
