From November 21, 2026, to March 28, 2027, the Charleroi Museums of Fine Arts and Glass present an exhibition dedicated to Anne Bonnet (1908-1960), a significant figure in 20th-century Belgian painting and co-founder of the La Jeune Peinture Belge group.
Initially figurative and influenced by animism, Anne Bonnet gradually evolved towards an abstraction where geometry, light, and landscape played a central role. Her travels, wartime experiences, and environment fueled this artistic transformation.
Recognized during her lifetime, she participated in numerous groups and exhibitions, also exploring textiles. Despite her activity, her work remains less known today than that of some of her male contemporaries, within a historical art context that was less favorable to women artists. The publication in 2022 of the first monograph on her work has helped to renew interest in her career.
The exhibition aims to rediscover the diversity of her practice and her essential role in the Belgian art scene of the 1940s and 1950s. Paintings, textile works, and archives dialogue with those of her contemporaries, highlighting the artistic networks in which she evolved, beyond the La Jeune Peinture Belge group. It also addresses the links between painting and textiles, her involvement in various groups, and the place of women in art history, while questioning the traditional representations of an artist long overshadowed by her male colleagues.
