From November 3rd to 30th, 2026, residents of Wallonia Picardy are invited to provide their input on the territory's future structuring cycling network, a proposal for which is available online.

The project aims to encourage daily cycling trips, thereby reducing reliance on cars. Wallonia aims to increase cycling's share of daily travel from 1% to 5% and decrease car usage from 83% to 60% by 2030, in line with its 2022 "cycling policy" decree and regional mobility strategy.
To achieve this goal, a continuous, safe, and direct cycling network is needed. The structuring cycling network, planned for 2040, will identify major routes to be developed as priorities. It is designed for utilitarian daily commutes, connecting key hubs such as town centers, train stations, schools, and business areas.
This network will consist of two levels of connections: cycle highways, forming the backbone with a high level of service and separation from car traffic, and functional supra-local cycling links, which will create a mesh connecting town centers and points of interest. Local service links within municipalities will remain at each commune's discretion.
The work builds upon existing assets such as the RAVeL (1,550 km developed) and the node network, aiming to connect these elements and identify missing links.
The study, conducted since January 2026 by the Walloon Public Service for Mobility and Infrastructure with the Transamo engineering firm, first established a diagnosis of travel patterns. An intention scheme, validated in April, defined the hubs to be connected. This scheme was then translated into concrete routes through discussions with the 23 municipalities and field workshops.
The current version of the network is now submitted for public review. The consultation aims to gather residents' experiences regarding practical aspects and points that make cycling routes intimidating or inconvenient. The input of those who do not yet cycle is particularly sought.
Each contribution will be read, located, and analyzed. All proposals will feed into the next version of the network, to be reviewed in early 2027. While not all suggestions can be implemented due to technical and financial feasibility, all will be considered and their treatment reported.
