Following the launch of the village center construction in Celles, the weekly market had been moved from Place Verte to the parking lot of Home Saint-Joseph. However, the traveling vendors who set up there on Wednesday afternoons have recently abandoned the retirement home's parking lot, deeming the footfall too low and unprofitable.
Alderman Sébastien Defontaine wished to clarify the Commune of Celles' perspective. "We did everything possible to keep the traveling vendors here, saving them electricity costs and offering free space. To find an alternative solution and address this issue of attendance, we proposed that these four itinerant merchants set up near the sports hall to benefit from a high-traffic area with an adjacent CASH point." This proposal was, however, declined by all the vendors.
"But the Commune is not closed off to finding a solution that suits these merchants while the village center works are ongoing," the alderman concluded.
