After nearly three years of work launched in November 2023, Charleroi's Metro Line M5 is entering its final phase. The construction project, funded by the European recovery plan, was completed within the initial deadlines. The next step includes intensive technical tests and staff training.
Minor finishing touches are still planned before the opening, including landscaping around the station exteriors, fine-tuning of signaling equipment, and completion of interior facilities such as escalators, elevators, lighting, and fire detection systems.
In parallel, TEC Charleroi is continuing its network modernization. This includes the refurbishment of 47 motor cars until 2027, the implementation of a new speed control system on Line M5, and the upgrade of the control center's supervision tools by December 2026.
From August 2026 to May 2027, Line M5 will undergo technical "dry runs" without passengers. The frequency of trains will gradually increase to simulate real conditions and validate safety parameters. Approximately 300 employees will be trained on the new equipment.
The introduction of Line M5 will lead to a reorganization of bus routes. The "GHdC" shuttle will be discontinued, while the new "M5ab" bus line will take over from the metro each evening after 8 PM to ensure full service to all M5 stations.
The M5 construction involved the removal of 80,000 m³ of spoil, the renovation of 5400 m of tracks, and the laying of 6000 m of new tracks. The 12 km line is equipped with new signaling and has mobilized several TEC Charleroi teams.
