Extensive renovation works will commence on the R5, between Jemappes and Asquillies, in autumn 2026, lasting for three years.

The Walloon Region has allocated a budget of 50 million euros for the complete refurbishment of this road link, crucial for the mobility of residents in the Mons Borinage region. The construction, expected to last over three years, should theoretically conclude by the end of the first semester of 2029 and will be carried out in several phases.
The preparatory phase will begin in autumn 2026. It will involve creating about ten passages in the central reservation to maintain traffic flow throughout the project. One lane in each direction will remain open.
For drivers in Frameries, the immediate impact will be the construction of a temporary roundabout at the Cheval Blanc intersection, where the N6 meets the N546. Work will proceed in two successive phases: from October 12 to 18, 2026, on the Frameries side, and from October 19 to 25, 2026, on the Givry side.
During these interventions, traffic on the N6 will be managed with alternating traffic lights. The N546 will become a dead end at the intersection. Diversion routes will be established for traffic coming from Frameries and Givry, with specific provisions for heavy goods vehicles to prevent significant traffic rerouting through the villages of Nouvelle and Harvengt.
The overall deep renovation project for the ring road includes the complete replacement of the road structure and sub-foundation over approximately ten kilometers, between kilometer markers 0 and 10.5, from Jemappes to Asquillies.
The work will encompass the thorough resurfacing of all traffic lanes in both directions, renovation of access and exit ramps, repair of 13 bridges, and rehabilitation of acoustic barriers. The objective is to sustainably upgrade this infrastructure to significantly enhance driver safety and comfort.
