As part of its efforts to revitalize the territory and commerce, the City of Fleurus was invited by Europe to participate in the URBACT Festival in Nicosia, Cyprus. This participation is within the framework of the European network Cities@Heart, an initiative aimed at shaping the city center of tomorrow. The event gathers over 500 participants from 35 different cities, with the Belgian delegation comprising 35 representatives, placing Belgium 5th in terms of country representation. Fleurus, alongside Hannut, is one of only two Walloon towns involved in this significant project.
This initiative aligns with the « Fleurus 2030 » vision and brings concrete benefits to the population. These include a more dynamic city center through support for local businesses and efforts to combat vacant premises, services tailored to citizens' daily needs (mobility, green spaces, living environment) via a participatory method, a digital and social transition using precise urban data for fairer public services, and European outreach strengthening partnerships with other cities.
“"Keeping the heart of our city center healthy is essential for ensuring the dynamism of our local economy. By cooperating with other European cities, Fleurus adopts and accelerates innovative solutions that directly benefit our citizens and our merchants."
Fleurus's teams worked on urban planning and local economy during the festival, methods that will be concretely applied within the territory. Thanks to funding from the European Union and the Interreg program, the City of Fleurus is developing a modern, sustainable, and welcoming living environment.
Beyond the technical and strategic aspects, this European presence is a recognition for Fleurus, positioning it alongside major metropolises and allowing it to voice Wallonia's perspective. This demonstrates Fleurus's boldness and innovation as a driving force for the region.
