Wallonia has experienced almost no rainfall since the September 22nd meeting, with an average of only 1 to 2 mm. IRM forecasts indicate slightly above-seasonal temperatures and dry weather until Wednesday, October 7th, when limited precipitation is expected.
The IRM drought index shows an extremely dry situation expected to persist. September was characterized as warm and dry, with rainfall 40% to 100% below normal across the region.
River flows are steadily decreasing, nearing minimum values, particularly concerning for non-navigable waterways. Reservoir situations vary, with some normal for the season (Gileppe), others lower (Eupen, Nisramont), or under control (Eau d'Heure, Plate-Taille, Ry de Rome).
Groundwater aquifers are continuing their summer drainage phase, showing levels below seasonal averages, especially in the Condroz Limestones and Sandstones and the Calestienne-Famenne. Levels are not expected to rise until late October or early November.
The fire risk is temporarily low following recent rains but will become high again from October 2nd due to persistent drought. Extreme vigilance is maintained.
Coarse fishing has been prohibited since October 1st. Navigation restrictions, in place since July 1st, continue to apply, causing waiting times and suspending night maneuvers on certain waterways. Navigation is interrupted on the Historic Canal of Centre.
The bathing season closed on September 30th. The water production and distribution situation remains concerning for SWDE due to declining groundwater levels. Seventeen municipalities have issued water usage restriction orders, including Bouillon, Léglise, Rochefort, Saint-Hubert, Trois Ponts, Vresse-sur-Semois, Tenneville, Rouvroy, Chimay, Theux, Stoumont, Chiny, Libin, Gedinne, Libramont, Musson, and Attert.
Other distributors like Inasep, INBW, and CILE report low or monitored levels. VIVAQUA is maintaining production under a temporary ministerial derogation despite low flow rates in the Upper Meuse.
The prohibition of operating hydroelectric power plants, except those on major dams, remains in effect since July 18th. All seasonal water abstraction is prohibited or requires prior declaration.
